Nine years ago, Bandai Namco Pictures released a two-part OVA that threw the Yoshiwara red-light district into total romantic chaos. The plot centers on a banned incense that makes anyone who inhales it fall desperately in love with the first person they see.
When the stern Tsukuyo accidentally breathes in the fumes, she immediately locks eyes with the lazy Gintoki. The studio delivers brilliant whiplash comedy here, shifting from crude physical gags to surprisingly tender moments in a heartbeat.
This release remains a perfect example of how to execute a specialized comedy spin-off. It reminds us that behind all the meta-jokes, the genuine bonds between these flawed characters are what kept fans invested.
