On This Day in Anime

Fifteen years ago, Studio Ghibli invited us to look beneath the floorboards. We follow Shou, a sickly boy who discovers Arrietty, a tiny teenager who survives by "borrowing" small human items. Their secret friendship forms a fragile bridge between two vastly different scales of life.

Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi turns a suburban home into a perilous wilderness of towering grass and giant house cats. The studio's hand-drawn artistry shines here, giving every drop of water and lost sugar cube a heavy, physical presence.

The movie lands today because of its bittersweet honesty. The bond between the ailing boy and the fierce Borrower cannot last, making their brief connection feel incredibly precious.
